Hy-Vee offers home health care products

timothy.rohwer@nonpareilonline.com Shoppers at the new Hy-Vee Drugstore at Eighth Street and West Broadway may have noticed an expanded array of health-related items in the back area.

“We’ve taken it to the next level,” said Kip Peterson, assistant manager.

That’s how he described the expansion of the home health care department.

“You name it, we have it,” Peterson said.

The new department is located right by the pharmacy and the non-prescription medicine aisles. The first items that come into view are the various lift chairs on display.

These push-button, remote control chairs are ideal for people with serious arthritis problems or those who simply have a difficult time getting out of a chair, according to Peterson. They can tilt forward to help the individual out of the chair easier, or tilt backward as a relaxing recliner, or even tilt all the back to use as a bed, he said.

“We’ll have six to 10 on display and we’ll deliver them,” Peterson said. “That’s part of the cost.”

What’s more, Medicare can pick up part of the tab, he said. “We can special order, also,” he said. “We can special order anything.”

Besides the chairs, the department features tub bars for safer entering and exiting of the tub, tub chair for sitting down while taking a shower, foam bed wedges for elevating the body when sleeping, bed pans, portable commodes, canes, crutches – even diabetic socks. These are socks with loose fitting tops so as to avoid restricting blood flow into the foot, Peterson said.

The department sells diabetic shoes that keep feet elevated when walking.

A big reason for this expanded selection was the hiring of Dawn Allmon as the store’s home health care specialist. She operated On The Go Medical Equipment And Supplies in the Sundahl Plaza on West Broadway.

“We’ve really expanded when she came to work with us,” Peterson said.

In the short time this department has been opened, the public response has been good, he added.

“They’re excited about this and our great service,” Peterson said. “We have people who know what they are doing.”
