“Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”

That’s what people who benefit from palliative care services at Brockville General Hospital tell organizers of the Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament, says co-chairman Dave Publow.

Speaking to The Recorder and Times during a media session Tuesday at the Brockvile Country Club, Publow said families appreciate the quality of care provided at home and later in hospital for dying loved ones.

Moreover, the tournament is widely supported in the community because “people are realists” and recognize their family may well need the palliative care service at some point, said Publow.

Further, the community understands the service is not funded by the province and it is up to local residents to ensure the quality of care continues to be available, he said.

“This matches our theme, ‘Friends Helping Friends,’” said Publow.

“Everybody comes together to raise funds for people who are dying.”

Publow said the goal for the 2010 tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 1 equals the $135,000 raised at last year’s event.

The tournament and a February telethon are the major fundraisers for the service, which originated at the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital before that site was folded into BGH operations in 2006.

Publow said a few spaces remain open in the morning draw but a full field of 244 golfers is expected for the four-person scramble that uses shotgun starts for both draws.

“We’re light on the competition. It’s a fundraiser, not a serious tournament,” he said.
